Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded for clarifying the anti-aging role of Telomeres

Since that time other studies have shown that purified Resveratrol also has a telomere protective quality and may increase both the production and survival of stem cells as well.

Another critical factor in reducing aging are the sirtuins, a class of proteins which are closely associated with the aging process in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans. Dr David Sinclair of Harvard, and later Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, published a landmark study in the journal Nature in 2006 which concluded that Resveratrol activated these enzymes resulting in a 31% extension of the life span of obese mice in his study. Other studies have shown even more dramatic results in fish and other animals.

A Good Reason for Vegetarian Omega 3 Oils

“Anybody taking Omega 3 supplements based on fish oil needs to think about our vegetarian alternative.” That’s the message from James Betz, CEO of herbal supplement company Biotivia.

And he could have a point. The consumer group FishOilSafety.com (1) has recently launched a class action against ten fish-oil based manufacturers, claiming that the levels of carcinogenic PCBs in their products exceed California health regulations.

“Although PCBs have been banned for over 30 years (2),” Betz continues, “they are what is known as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (3), which means they don’t degrade and so get into the food chain. Farmed salmon, where much of the Omega 3 oil on the market today comes from, is particularly at risk. To compound the risk most fish oil supplement suppliers do not test for these compounds so it is impossible for the consumer to know if PCBs are in the supplement they are taking.”

A study by Indiana University concurs.”We think it’s important for people who eat salmon to know that farmed salmon have higher levels of toxins than wild salmon from the open ocean,” said IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs Distinguished Professor Ronald Hites, who led the study. (4)

Nowadays, most people tend to think of the hormones estrogen and testosterone as being exclusively male or female. But the reality of it is that women and men produce both hormones, because our bodies need a healthy balance of them both for healthy bone development, muscles and sex drive.

The downside to this is that the balance between the estrogen and testosterone levels can change due to age or environmental factors. This can have an adverse effect on men as they get older as they begin to produce more estrogen and less testosterone. This is not good as over production of estrogen in men can lead to a heightened risk of blood clots and encourages middle-aged spread, including gynecomastia or male breasts. Resveratrol could prove HRT alternative, study

Treatment based on resveratrol could be a safer alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women and could help prevent breast cancer, according to a new study.

The findings of a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry indicate that resveratrol is the most likely candidate of the phytoestrogens to offer safer HRT and chemoprevention of breast cancer due to its estrogenic activity and high antitumor activity.
