Science strengthens prebiotic potential of almond skins

The skin of almonds may exert a prebiotic effect and enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, says new research.

Low vitamin B6 may increase Parkinson’s disease risk

Insufficient levels of vitamin B6 may increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease by about 50 per cent, says a new study from Japan.

The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, does not prove that low vitamin B6 levels are the cause of Parkinson’s disease, but indicates that additional study should focus on whether increased levels of vitamin B6 may reduce the risk of developing the disease…

Compound in wine may protect against stroke

For years, scientists have promoted the health benefits of red wine. Numerous studies have shown that moderate consumption of red wine can help protect against certain cancers and heart disease, and can have a positive effect on blood pressure and cholesterol. Red wine has also been found to help protect the brain during a stroke. However, the key to red wine’s protective powers has remained a mystery.

Now, researchers at the Hopkins Medical School say they have discovered the compound in red wine that may protect the brain from damage following a stroke.

Martek is developing a vegetarian source of chondroitin – a popular joint health ingredient that is normally sourced from animal cartilage. Chondroitin has established a strong joint health reputation in the US and Asia with studies indicating that supplementation may benefit people suffering from osteoarthritis.

For the moment, chondroitin is predominantly sourced from the cartilage of sharks, and to a lesser extent pigs and cows. But Martek believes that it can bring a vegetarian source of chondroitin to market using its microbial fermentation technology.

Probiotics show potential to stop C. difficile: Study

Daily supplements of a proprietary blend of probiotic bacteria may virtually prevent diarrhoea-associated with C. difficile infection, according to new research from North America.

Additionally, a dose-response was observed, with higher doses of probiotics associated with the greatest protective effect, according to findings published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, and presented at the International Probiotics Association’s World Congress in Miami.

Resveratrol could help Thalassemia sufferers
