Probiotics Improve Atopic Dermatitis

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

According to a paper recently presented at the New York Academy of Sciences symposium, “Probiotics: From Bench to Market”, held on June 11, 2010, two probiotic strains significantly improved atopic dermatitis, which affects 17.2 percent of the U.S. population. The clinical study evaluated the impact of a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 and Bifidobacterium lactis UABLA-12 (fromUAS Labs) on 90 preschool children …

The Resveratrol Bioavailability, Caloric Restriction and Life Extension Conundrum: A New Understanding Just Might Resolve This Contentious Debate

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

From a metabolic standpoint, life extension research is fraught with conflict and confusion. There are two opposing but temporally cooperative forms of mitochondrial renewal, but the research community usually uses the single term ‘mitochondrial biogenesis’ to describe both of them …

Resveratrol, antioxidants, free radicals and fruit

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

As we grow older, the body finds it harder to deal with the daily stresses put upon it. Whether its from lack of exercise, pollution from sunlight, alcohol or cigarettes or what we eat, all these things will contribute to the production of cell damaging free radicals.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that interact with molecules within our cells and cause oxidative damage to our proteins, membranes and genes.

Oxidative damage has been cited as the principal cause of many diseases, and has been found to be a huge factor into the degradation of the body’s ability to repair DNA, control aging and failing to maintain a balanced and healthy immune system.

The western diet, which is rich in red meat, preservatives, antibiotics, growth hormones and chemical food additives contributes to oxidative stress and the breakdown of the body’s defenses. This is why a potent antioxidant is required to help deal with the production of free radicals and to help combat oxidative stress.

There are several well known super-fruits, with the largest antioxidant levels recorded. Some of them are:

  • Apples -Their skin has one of the highest ORAC values of any polyphenol yet discovered.
  • Goji Berry – Has a uniquely rich source of complex phyto-nutrients and bio-flavonoids.
  • Pomegranate – Contains high ORAC and polyphenol values. This fruit produced a 32% increase in plasma antioxidant capacity in human trials.
  • Mangosteen – Shown to have antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and pro immune system activity in studies since 2004.
  • Grape Seed – A powerful proanthocyanidin with 400 times the effective antioxidant capacity of Vitamin E.

Now Biotivia, a world leading Bioceutical firm, has recognised the antioxidant power of these and added to them, Alpha Lipoic Acid and the ‘miracle molecule, Resveratrol, to create a supplement called Bio Quench.

James Betz, founder and CEO of Biotivia says:Bio Quench was designed to mop up free radicals through a multi-faceted approach. The super-fruit extracts it contains works together with bio-enhanced Resveratrol and alpha lipoic acid, to prevent damage to the body’s cells, organs and DNA.”

Bio Quench works by neutralizing free radicals and providing your body with a first line of defense against reactive oxidative stress (ROS). It has been tested by Brunswick Laboratory, the leading authority on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test, and it came back with a rating of 13,580, which is one of the highest for any supplement the lab has tested.

Betz continues: “Bio Quench sets a new standard for super antioxidants. Biotivia has eclipsed every other advanced antioxidant on the market. Our daily dose is equivalent to over 500 liters of pure, organic Pomegranate juice. No other product has the potency and antioxidant effectiveness of Bio Quench”

A Good Reason for Vegetarian Omega 3 Oils

Friday, May 28th, 2010

“Anybody taking Omega 3 supplements based on fish oil needs to think about our vegetarian alternative.” That’s the message from James Betz, CEO of herbal supplement company Biotivia.

And he could have a point. The consumer group FishOilSafety.com (1) has recently launched a class action against ten fish-oil based manufacturers, claiming that the levels of carcinogenic PCBs in their products exceed California health regulations.

“Although PCBs have been banned for over 30 years (2),” Betz continues, “they are what is known as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (3), which means they don’t degrade and so get into the food chain. Farmed salmon, where much of the Omega 3 oil on the market today comes from, is particularly at risk. To compound the risk most fish oil supplement suppliers do not test for these compounds so it is impossible for the consumer to know if PCBs are in the supplement they are taking.”

A study by Indiana University concurs.”We think it’s important for people who eat salmon to know that farmed salmon have higher levels of toxins than wild salmon from the open ocean,” said IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs Distinguished Professor Ronald Hites, who led the study. (4)

Green Omega 3 is 100% vegetarian.

Biotivia have produced an Omega 3 product which provides high levels of EPA and DHA fatty acids, along with benefical co-ingredients.

- Swiss Martek DHA oil from algae (5)

- Peruvian Salba seed DHA oil. (6)

- Sesame seed (7) anti-oxidant lignans.(8)

- Cranberry oil, magnesiumn – and DHA-rich (9).

- Green tea anti-oxidant extract.

- Biotivia research-grade Resveratrol. (10)

James Betz explains the reasons behind his formulation. “As a company that values its American Vegetarian Association vegan certification (11), we wanted to find a way to bring the huge benefits of Omega 3 to everyone. Our new formulation is suitable for all religions, vegetarians, vegans … and anybody else who is concerned about the purity of the foods and supplements they put in their body.”

Betz continues: “The recent news report by ABC (12) alerted consumers to the dangers of persistent PCBs which are still posing a health risk 30 years after they were banned. I’m pleased that, following two years of research, Biotivia working with Pfizer Pharmaceutical’s Capsugel division, is able to offer a safe, vegetarian alternative to fish-based products. Better still, Green Omega 3 is more potent and has a wider spectrum of benefits than the fish-based products it was designed to replace. Also, whereas fish oil quickly becomes rancid, Green Omega 3 has a two year shelf life”

Update. The first batch of Green Omega 3 sold out to existing Biotivia customers in days. To go on to the priority waiting list (delivery end May) please leave your email address at www.biotivia.com/greenomegalist.html
